My favourite season has arrived ... which is of course: AWARD SEASON. Which is also my favourite topic to talk about as I have LOTS of opinions. I find awards ceremonies interesting because they are a reflection of current society's social mores. I contend that awards are, yes incredibly pretentious institutions, but are interesting in the ways that they reveal and produce culture. The process of putting together a jury, choosing the nominations and then the campaigns of the nominees to influence the voting demonstrate the politics that uphold such a system. These awards reveal the institutional politics that are behind what narratives and counter-narratives are legitmised and produced. How many times are stories of racialised suffering is given cultural merit over empowering narratives that are not considered high-brown enough to be awarded. This arrogant notion of what is considered worthy of a nomination is completely biased and historically has been in the hands of white, cis, straight men. Reclaim the Gaze awards focuses on the depth and realisation of the storylines regarding gendered and racialised characters. What was the aim of the film? What was the message and how was it executed? What is this film's contribution to society and why is it relevant today? How is the character's complexity portrayed and how does it serve the wider plot? What is the motive of the director? All these questions, and here are my overall considerations for this year 2025 films that have been released.
